Our Missions

The CCDC has three key missions:

  1. Maintain the diversity of Clarksville through its affordable housing program. The CCDC’s homes and duplexes are scattered throughout the neighborhood and provide 17 low-income families with housing. In 2020, the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the CCDC a Community Vision Award for the organization’s affordable housing program. More information about this program can be found at Affordable Housing.

  2. Build community in Clarksville. An important part of Clarksville’s legacy is its strong sense of community. The CCDC builds on that legacy by organizing events for the neighborhood that bring people together and provide them with volunteer opportunities, and by sponsoring the Clarksville Community Garden (located behind the Haskell House).

CCDC events include an ice cream social, Haskell House Day, a Christmas Caroling Party and Clarksville Conversations: Sundays at the Haskell House, a quarterly speaker series. Conversations run the gamut, but focus on topics which link to the history and legacy of the original Clarksville community and its descendants, the on-site Community Garden, and current issues of interest to our neighborhood and neighborhood. Upcoming Clarksville Conversations can be found on the CCDC’s calendar, which is located on the Events page.

The organization also shares timely information with Clarksville residents about news, government initiatives, and public policies that will affect them or the neighborhood.

  3. Preserve Clarksville’s history. Under a use agreement with the City of Austin, the CCDC maintains the historic Hezikiah Haskell House and operates it as a museum about Clarksville’s history. The CCDC also works against the demolition of homes that contribute to the Clarksville National Register Historic District; helps the owners of historically contributing homes who want to remodel or enlarge their homes identify options for achieving their goals while keeping them contributing; sponsors events that educate neighborhood residents, residents of other neighborhoods and tourists about the history of Clarksville; and responds to media queries about that history.
